Beware of Pink Ribbons?

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and merchandise displaying Pink Ribbons are practically everywhere. Here are a few things to keep in mind while shopping:

There is not a patent on the “Pink Ribbon”. Anyone can use it.
Pink Ribbons help sell merchandise. For the retail industry, displaying the pink ribbon boosts sales and some companies may mark up the product as much as 4 times the typical price and then only donate a small percentage of that to breast cancer causes. Be cautious of the retail sector displaying the pink ribbon and read the small print. Some deduct the expenses and very little is given to the cause while with some products not a penny is donated.
Pink Ribbons do not mean “Safe Products”. Some of the products displaying pink ribbons and some companies donating a percentage of profits to breast cancer organizations actually sell products that contain chemicals linked to causing breast cancer. The number is probably much more than what you might hope.

You may want to consider donating directly to charitable organizations that focus on prevention of breast cancer such as the Breast Cancer Fund.

If you are looking for natural ways to combat colds and flu viruses, essential oils maybe the answer. Essential oils are oils extracted from plants and studies show they can be effective germ fighters. Many essential oils show promising results in killing various bacteria, viruses and staff. When looking for soap it is a good idea to purchase bars with essential oils. Be sure that pure essential oils were used in the product as artificial fragrances (often listed as “fragrance”) offers no benefit and some even have unwanted health effects. We have a listed a few essential oils here:

Eucalyptus
Tea Tree
Peppermint
Thyme
Clove Bud
Citrus oils such as:
Lemon
Orange
Grapefruit
Lime
Cinnamon Leaf
Rosemary
Lavender

We have formulated our High Five Soap with the first 5 essential oils on the list. You can shower with it and keep a bar at every sink in your house. Prevention is best so always wash your hands before preparing food and eating. Frequent hand washing is always beneficial so if you have young children, always remind them to wash their hands and remember to wash hands after being in public places to avoid spreading germs around your home.
